BEAUX ARTS PENTHOUSE

The penthouse of this historic Beaux Arts building, built in 1913, became spacious when John Robert Wiltgen Design teamed up with an architect to combine two units. With north, south and western exposures overlooking Lincoln Park and Lake Michigan, architectural details were added during this renovation, consistent with the Benjamin Marshall architecture. This remarkable residence was designed to showcase the client’s extensive collection of museum quality contemporary art.

Living Room

A Henry Moore bronze reclines across an exquisite French walnut, mahogany, ebony and pear wood TV console designed by JRWD and hand crafted in Egypt. This luxurious living room provides a stunning environment for elegant entertaining.

Kitchen

John Robert Wiltgen took off his suit coat, rolled up his shirt sleeves and went to work with the painters to achieve the desired effect. The cherry cabinets, which were seared with a branding iron and rubbed with gold dust, are combined with tumbled marble floors and slate counter tops imported from England.

Master Bedroom

The octagonal shape of this room was challenging and the answer included customizing. Original plaster moldings were duplicated and applied to the new walls and ceiling, and the Empire headboard was modified to fit a king-size mattress. An exceptional Renoir drawing hangs above the bed.

Bath Mosaic

JRWD spent weeks designing the intricate mosaic marble pattern on the ceiling and walls of this Roman inspired bath. Artisan’s hand cut each tile the size of a fingernail, creating a shimmering Byzantine pattern.

Master Bath

Quiet opulence describes this deluxe master bath that features a large walk-in closet, built-in dresser, dressing table, Whirlpool tub and separate steam shower.

Library

Newly installed custom walnut bookcases were scraped by hand and French polished to an aged patina. Designed to conceal the office equipment, the cabinets provide a warm backdrop for the furnishings.

Powder Room

Vertical plumbing risers limited the size of this powder room, but not it’s elegance. Gold plated fixtures, an antique gold leaf mirror, custom finishes and 19th Century prints from England make this little room a treasure.
