CONTEMPORARY NORTH SHORE ESTATEA couple transitioning from a Michigan Avenue penthouse to the suburbs with their growing family, invited their designer to go house shopping. They drew upon their history with John Robert Wiltgen Design, who created two other homes for them. An unfinished spec house with an adjoining lot were chosen. Wiltgen's creativity and vision enabled the couple to see the potential of the partially unfinished 6,500 square foot house, which expanded to 12,000 square feet. JRWD created both exterior and interior redesigns, as well as supervised the construction and completion of the interior. This was accomplished with a cohesive plan that integrated some of the client’s existing pieces, along with many new furnishings. Front FaçadeThe combination of blue stone, limestone and wrought iron, in conjunction with built-in planters, produce rich textures in the front of the house. Mature trees were planted to ease the new home into the existing neighborhood. FoyerJRWD created the construction documents and interior design concept integrating art, architecture and design throughout the home. Defined by architectural columns, the foyer is a dramatic gallery for their client’s growing art collection. Living RoomInspired by loft living, the spacious living room is open to the two story entry, dining and billiard rooms. Changes in flooring materials gracefully repeat the architectural lines of the home. Dining RoomA fondness for entertaining inspired the plan of the entire home. This dining room is open to the living room, billiard room/bar and foyer. The exquisite buffet featuring black and white lacquer, ebony doors and a granite top, is a Wiltgen design original. Master BathThis timeless master bath has everything you might expect in a luxurious spa, such as a whirlpool tub, granite steam shower, eight foot long his and her vanities, compartmentalized water closet and heated towel warmer. KitchenThe focus of this family’s life is centered around the kitchen, breakfast area and family room. The combination of beech cabinetry, glass, stainless steel and bleached oak floors, provide an uncomplicated background for this family of five. Play RoomThe playroom in the lower level of the house features colorful laminate surfaces, abundant play space, built-in storage and a window seat for napping. Parents can watch the kids through Lexon windows as they work out in the exercise room, or play the drums in the soundproof music room. CatwalkThe dramatic catwalk, illuminated by recessed lighting and skylights, showcases the family’s art collection en route to the children’s bedrooms. Closely spaced banisters were installed for the safety of their cat. The elegant and private master suite is on the opposite side of the home. |
